Chicago Vintage Home Series

The Historic Chicago Greystone Initiative® invites you to a series of monthly workshops on the care and maintenance of your historic home.  Held at locations across Chicago, the workshops address a broad range of home improvement, historic preservation, and green building topics.  Presenters include experienced contractors, preservation experts, historians, green building consultants, and Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago staff.  All workshops are FREE and open to the general public. Space is limited!  So please RSVP early.

The Care & Maintenance of Your Vintage Masonry Home
From greystones to bungalows to workers cottages, Chicago neighborhoods are defined by brick and stone buildings.  However, many homeowners are uncertain of how to best maintain and repair their vintage homes.  Presented by Mario Machnicki of Marion Restoration, this free workshop will cover: common masonry deterioration problems, identifying priority repairs, best practices for cleaning and repointing, and establishing a scope of work for rehab projects.

This program is being presented in collaboration with the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association.

ReHab, ReUse, RePurpose Tour and Workshop
Building construction and demolition sends significant amounts of high quality materials to landfills every year.  The ReBuilding Exchange diverts these materials from the waste stream and makes them accessible to the public at a low cost thereby protecting community health, creating jobs, and saving resources.  Come learn about how the wide range of building materials available at the ReBuilding Exchange can be incorporated directly into your home improvement projects or repurposed for other uses.

Kitchen and Bath Rehab 101: Enhancing the Livability of Your Vintage Home
From greystones and bungalows, Chicago's vintage homes are defined by their beauty, durability, and craftsmanship.  However, many people are now staying in their homes longer and have questions about how to update their kitchens and baths to best meet their longterm needs.  Presented by Ravi Ricker of WRAP Architecture, this workshop will cover: common kitchen and bath problems, identifying priority repairs, planning affordable improvements, and maximizing the health, safety, and energy efficiency of your rehab project.

Preparing Your Vintage Home for Winter

Workshop hosted by the Historic Chicago Greystone Initiative and the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association in October 2011 on practical, cost-effective strategies for enhancing the comfort and energy efficiency of a vintage home while also preserving the architectural features that make it unique.  The workshop also addressed important seasonal maintenance that can improve the health, safety, and durability of a vintage home during the heating season.
