NHS is committed to bringing practical green solutions to low- and moderate-income homeowners throughout Chicago. Recent initiatives include:
Green Homes for Chicago. The NHS Redevelopment Corporation (NHSRC) was selected as the developer for five ‘Green Homes for Chicago’ — environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and affordable newly-built homes. The ‘Green Homes for Chicago’ Program began with an international design competition sponsored by the City’s Departments of Environment and Housing to solicit designs for five innovative homes that would demonstrate efficient design and construction practices.
From 73 entries, a design jury chose five finalists, which led to the construction of two new homes in Chicago’s Hermosa community and three homes in the Englewood neighborhood. In 2004, NHSRC's two-story Factor 10 house at 1919 N. Keeler in the Hermosa neighborhood was named one of the top 10 Green Projects by the American Institute of Architects. The home was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis (EHDD Architecture).
Throop Street Green Bungalow Project. NHSRC demonstrated the range of possibilities in ‘going green’, even in an historic home, through the rehab of two bungalows in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Home features included bamboo flooring, Energy Star appliances, recycled content carpet, a rain garden, geothermal technology, and much more. These properties were showcased on the
Cavalcade of Homes and
Between the Parks Green Bungalow Project. Learn more about NHSRC’s green bungalows here.
