NHS of the Fox Valley was formed in August 2007 through collaboration with Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago. Its services focus on Kane County, with some programs focused particularly on northern Kane County. Kane County is located west of Chicago’s Cook County, centered around the Fox River. It includes 30 towns and cities spread out over 520 square miles, with the largest being Aurora, IL. Kane County is quickly transitioning from a largely rural environment to a suburban one, and the county offers the best of both to its residents. Numerous beautiful nature centers and forest preserves provide a gentle contrast to the Grand Victoria Casino and the Elfstrom Stadium baseball field. Metra trains, the Pace Bus System, and several major highways offer easy access to the Chicago metropolitan area. The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which conducts groundbreaking particle physics experiments, is located in both Kane County and the adjacent DuPage County.
NHS of the Fox Valley is centered in the city of Elgin, is one of the largest cities in Kane County and the eighth largest in Illinois. With a population of over 106,000, Elgin is one of the fastest growing communities in Kane County and is rich with diverse neighborhoods and cultures. The city has four major historic districts dedicated to preserving the city’s legacy and beautiful architecture, some of it going back to the city’s founding in the mid-1800s.
In addition to Elgin, NHS serves many other communities along the Fox River, including Carpentersville and the villages of East and West Dundee. Carpentersville was founded in 1887 and has a population of nearly 35,000. The community experienced rapid growth in the 1960s when a local manufacturing business along the Fox River became engaged in the business of community investment and improvement, especially in neighborhoods adjacent to the business. East and West Dundee, separated by the Fox River, have combined populations of just over 10,000. Local attractions include an amusement park and numerous scenic bike and walking trails.
